Excel WorkBook Protection

How to protect a Workbook

Excel’s Workbook Protection prevents users from:

  • Changing the structure of the workbook
  • Adding and deleting sheets
  • Renaming and moving sheets.
  • Hiding and unhiding sheets
  • viewing hidden sheets
  • Resizing or moving the workbook window

To enable Workbook Protection:

  • Click on Tools-Protection-Protect Workbook an select a password (optional)
  • Check or uncheck the Structure and Windows checkboxes

By default the Structure is protected and the Windows are unprotected.

A common but not recommended use of Workbook protection is to stop users from viewing confidential information on hidden sheets. Workbook protection will stop the average user but not a determined or malicious user. Consider your audience (users) and the nature of your information.
